Scuba Diving has become hugely popular in the last 20 years. You will be amazed if you ask around how many of your friends have scuba diving certification.

diving certification. These include NAUI,SSI,bsac and the big dog these days PADI.

The Professional Association of Diving Instuctors (PADI), is by far the biggest and most recognizable dive certification agency in the market.

They have a solid system in place that over time can take you from total newbie to experienced dive master if you wish. There is no requirement however for you to go past the advanced open water stage if you so choose.

It all starts with a dive medical carried out by a certified dive specializing doctor. Its not a big deal really and basically just checks out if you should be alright with the pressure differences your body will feel underwater.

The next step in your quest for scuba diving certification is to pass a basic water skills test. You will need to show that you can swim 200 metres/yards with out stopping. It can be using any stroke and there is no time limit for this. Next you will need to float or tread water for 10 minutes in any way you feel comfortable.

Its a good idea if you go down to your local pool an put in a bit of practice to ensure you can do this. Again if you know how to swim these tasks really aren’t that hard.

Next comes a couple of days doing both class work and pool exercises to learn all about the new scuba diving equipment and enviroment your about to enter. Once your instructor is happy with how you are going in the pool it will be time to get serious.

You will now head out to one of the local reefs to repeat everything you have done in the pool only at an increased depth. This should take about 4 to 5 dives so its a great way to start your diving experience in an exotic scuba diving vacation spot with some really good supervision.

Congrats you are now a certified open water scuba diver.

This means you can now hire dive tanks or fill your own tanks because you have a certification card which will always be asked for when you try to do these things. Any good day dive company will also require you to show your scuba diving certification card before allowing you to dive with them.

On these trips you are now allowed to dive to a depth of  18 m/ 60 feet with out being supervised. This may be as far as you ever want to go with your scuba diving certification. I personally find that unless there is something specific I need to see at a greater depth  then it suits me just fine at about 6m/18 feet where there is still plenty of colour visible in the coral and fish life.

However i can guarantee that even if you just dive occasionally there is going to come a time when you are going to want to go deeper. This is where the advanced open water certification course comes in. Once you have completed this it will allow you to dive to 30m/100feet.

This can easily be done while on any scuba diving vacation. Just let the dive shop know that you would like to complete the advanced scuba diving certification course while you are there. They will then work it into your dive schedule so you get to see some things as well as doing whats needed to qualify.

With this qualification you have pretty much gone as far as you need for your scuba diving vacations. Very few people bother to go further than this unless they have something specific in mind or wish to make a career out of scuba diving which is certainly possible these days.
